Rig Smackdown: Rhett Shull vs. Zach Broyles
Rhett and Zach end almost every episode of Dipped In Tone with a rig dip-where they discuss and rate a guitar, amp, and pedal setup submitted by a listener-but this time, they’re assembling and critiquing dream rigs of their own, on a budget.
They each get to brainstorm a $1000 rig followed by a $10,000 rig, using toys and prices found on Reverb. When you’ve only got 10 Benjamins to spend, what pieces of kit should you prioritize? Rhett throws most of his budget behind his guitar and amp head, with just a few bucks left for a bargain-bin cab and a couple cheap pedals, but Zach spreads his grand out fairly evenly, opting for affordable offerings from Epiphone and Vox for his base tone.
Things get spicy in the upper range. Rhett takes Zach to task over prioritizing a $1300 vintage TS-style pedal, but they both opt for high-dollar amps from the same manufacturer for their ten-grand stage setup.
Who created the better rig at each price point? Which components did they fumble? And what would you do with each budget? Let us know in the comments.

For a 2k rig, I'd probably go with that Sovtek. Maybe with a Harley Benton 2x12 Creamback for 300. Either that or the Marshall ST20H Studio 20 JTM or Plexi, for about 850, with a 1x12 Celestion V30, for about 150. Then a Vintera I 60s Modified Telecaster (Sea Foam), 650 or the previous version of the Epiphone 59 Les Paul. Plumes, Rat (or TC Magus), EHX Octavix, 200. JHS Series 3 reverb, 100. TC Bucket Brigade Delay. 50.

I'd go with a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster (or Epiphone Les Paul Special P90, Yellow), Vox AC30S1, and also that Behringer SF fuzz. Or if I could afford it, TC Magus Pro with the different Rat voices. Think could probably just about squeeze that into $1000, especially if scouted eBay for the amp. People get rid of those AC30S1 for similar price to the AC15, because they're too loud for home use.

Easy answer to the Cheap amp high end guitar vs Cheap guitar high end amp The one that sounds the best to my ears...isn't that how all decisions on gear should be made oh and when it comes to tonewoods...well as long as it doesn't shrink, holds up well and looks good, which good QC controlled guitars do (Gibson and Kiesel...you know what I'm on about 🤨boo) that's all that matters!! BTW I own 3 Gibsons, but they were hand picked!

since Rhett has the Mig 50 already you should at least try to do an actual shootout of the two amps, with Rhett using the crappiest Peavy Cab (maybe buy that one).

This is why I buy maple necks with no regard, the “tone” difference isn’t even detectable. Pick ups will absolutely dominate this, and then couple that with effect pedals, which is the only reason electric guitar is even still relevant. I would love to hear a “tone wood” test through a tone bender at full wail.

My $1k rig: prs se ce24 satin, supro delta king 12, catalinbread echorec As for the 10k rig: clapton cut explorer and a avri 52 tele (bc I heard on this podcast always bring 2 guitars to a gig), 2 Mesa Boogie TA-30’s, a T-Rex Echorec. Simple enough but should pack a punch. I have no experience with big amps so I stuck with what I do know.

My current $1000 rig G&l tribute asat thinline $350 Blackstar studio 10 el84 $250 Mxr variac fuzz $50 Boss overdrive/distortion $50 Boss chorus ensemble $50 Boss digital delay $50 Electro harmonix oceans reverb $50 Donner looper/drum machine $90 Got $60 bucks left! All used on marketplace except the guitar and amazon donner looper. Fun episode, I think the vox was solid option, peavey and blackstar studio line up, used crate tube amps, or the tube traynor combos, and blues jr all seem to fit the bill. I’d also look at Timmy and klon clones for OD choices.

Two things I can confirm: 1. The TR Studio Sig is a killer amp. I wish i could try it with some 10s because I'm sure it's a killer setup as well. 2. Most Les Pauls are probably a fine choice (I'm talking after things are QC'd as good,) but finding the right one that's special to you is an amazing feeling. Lucked out and got a BOTB R9 weighing in at a shockingly light 7.4lbs of ultra light mahogany.
